The Officer holding the ship's wheel was called a Quarter Master. The duty of this Officer was to keep the ship on course, while he watched the compass directly in front of him making sure that the ship would stay on it's bearing. Captain Henry George Kendall only commanded the Empress of Ireland for two trips across the Atlantic. On May 29th, 1914 Captain Kendall orders the Empress of Ireland to a complete stop when he loses sight of a coal collier within a fog bank, he believes the Empress was dead in the water. Minutes later the Empress of Ireland would sink killing 1,014 passengers and crew.

Life boat equipment was inspected and crew went through drills to ensure that all life boats operated properly before the ship left Liverpool or Quebec City. Daily Inspections of the whole ship were performed at 10:30 am. By the Captain but if the weather did not permit the Captain from doing it, the Chief Officer would take his place and do the Daily Inspection.
