The R.M.S. Empress of Ireland Community
Empress of Ireland built in 1905 - 1906 by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Govan, Scotland for the Canadian Pacific Railway Co. On the night of May 29th, 1914 the Empress of Ireland is steaming towards Liverpool, England with a large contingent of Salvationist, including other passengers and crew. For unknown reasons Captain Kendall makes a decision to stop his ship while knowing another steamer (the Storstad)is approach through fog. This decision would resonate throughout the decades as deadliest disaster in the maritime history in Canada, claiming 1,012 lives of passenger and crew.
